Plenty of bereaved military families did not hear from Trump”

Trump has been under fire in recent days over his handling of condolence calls, but De Alencar said the President was gracious.

The phone call was released after White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly pushed back against Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson's criticism that Trump told a Gold Star widow "he knew what he signed up for".

On the same day as Trump made the claims of having called almost all the families of military dead, the White House asked the Pentagon for updated information about contact information for surviving family members.

Relatives of people who died in military service have recounted varied interactions with President Donald Trump in the hard days and weeks after the deaths of their loved ones.

And now she was about to speak to the president.

When asked by Miami station WPLG if she indeed heard Trump say that she answered: "Yeah, he said that". It's somewhat obscured the incident that Trump was actually being asked about when he made the claim, however ― the killing of Sgt. Johnson, along with three other soldiers, during a military operation in the African nation of Niger.

Meanwhile, Natasha De Alencar told the Post she and her children all sat around the phone when Trump called, with one filming the conversation.

Two days after the arrival of her husband's body, Trump called as she sat with an Army casualty officer.

"I have no hard feelings toward anybody", she said.

Why the wait? Sanders said there is a process undertaken by the Pentagon and the White House to ascertain details about the slain soldiers.

On Tuesday, the White House claimed that Obama did not call Kelly, a retired Marine general, when his son, Robert, was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

Over the course of the roughly four-minute call, Trump can be heard empathetically consoling the Gold Star widow, repeatedly reiterating his "respect" for the fallen Staff Sgt. calling him an "amazing husband" and an "amazing solider".

At the White House, a visibly angry Trump told reporters that "I didn't say what that congresswoman said, didn't say it at all, she knows it".

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. But she said Trump was totally sympathetic to the widow, and is "appalling" that WIlson "has politicized this issue, and the way she is trying to make this about something that it isn't".

But they're not looking for a call. I knew exactly what could possibly happen to Caleb. He left a "really nice" phone message with his cellphone number in case she needed anything, she said. "If you're around Washington, you come over and see me in the Oval Office".

Despite the much heavier toll on his watch - more than 800 dead each year from 2004 through 2007 - Bush wrote to all bereaved military families and met or spoke with hundreds if not thousands, said his spokesman, Freddy Ford.

"Because it was noncombat, I feel like maybe he thought it was an accident, it doesn't matter", Sheila Murphy said of Trump. "They said we could order more copies of it if we wanted", she said.
