Orionid meteor shower: How Canadians can view the celestial show this weekend”

Read tips from Seminole State College planetarium director Derek Demeter on how to make the most of your experience if you plan to visit the park for the meteor shower.

Be sure to look up at the night sky this weekend as the Orionid Meteor Shower will peak between October 20 and 22.

So what exactly is it?

The meteors will be seen worldwide, according to NASA, but for Oklahomans, the best viewing will be in far western Oklahoma, or in any state west of the state lane, except California, where smoke from the wildfires will make viewing hard. Don't worry - Newsround's got you covered.

If the skies are clear enough, you could witnesses up to 20 shooting stars an hour. You can find that out here. The meteor shower will start near the sword in the constellation. Orionid meteors appear every year around this time when Earth orbits through an area of space littered with debris from Halley's Comet, according to NASA.

Look up at the night sky this weekend and you'll find a dazzling sight: The Orionid meteor shower, which will be at peak visibility over the next few days.

These meteoroids are subject to the gravity of planets, which makes it hard to predict how many of them will pass by Earth any given year.

The darker location you visit, the brighter the meteors will appear in the sky.

You'll be able to spot them clearly in the eastern sky just above the horizon.

However after midnight, the Orionids will emerge in any direction from the Orion constellation, as seen from Canada or Europe.

With meteor showers you must be prepared to wait, so star gazers are advised to bring something to sit or lie down on.

Get as far from city lights as possible. This is easy to locate in the sky: most people can pick out the line of three stars known as Orion's Belt.

Good luck, meteor spotters!
