GJM supporters clash with police in W Bengal, SI killed

GJM supporters clash with police in W Bengal, SI killed”

The GJM claimed three of its supporters were killed in police firing. The police, however, did not comment on this.

Police said the shootout followed a pre-dawn raid on a forest hideout used by members of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), a regional party agitating for a separate state for the Gorkha ethnic minority.

ADG Sharma said the police, which faced "heavy fire power" from the group, retaliated. The police recovered 6 AK 47 and some nine mm pistol and around 500 rounds of cartridges from the spot.

He said the police had gathered information of Gurung's links with Maoists and other rebel groups in the North East.

“He has procured arms from them.

The GJM leader was in hiding in neighbouring Sikkim and had tried to enter the Darjeeling hills today, Sharma said, adding that he was now trying to get back to Sikkim.

"We told him that the centre must intervene as soon as possible, and call us for talks on all the pending issues, including Gorkhaland", he said.

Early in the morning at 5 am, today, violence once again broke out in the hills of West Bengal, when the Kolkata police raided a forest area near Patlebas in Darjeeling.

Though Union home minister Rajnath Singh appealed to Gurung to withdraw the indefinite strike in Darjeeling, the Centre must now decide if it wants to involve a "fugitive" in the discussions, said an officer in Kolkata, asking not to be named. Police investigation is yet to ascertain who was behind the incident.

According to the Newspaper, However, we strongly oppose what the state government is doing in Darjeeling hills.

Gurung, charged under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, is wanted by the Bengal government for multiple clashes, subsequent deaths, and a 104-day shut down that has crippled the Darjeeling region since June this year.

The GJM is an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
