Sharif family: indictment averted for now”

Accountability court hearing references against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members was forced to adjourn the case without any proceedings after PML-N lawyers resorted to sloganeering within the courtroom on the alleged misbehavior of police personnel.

A team of Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is likely to visit London in the coming days to collect evidence of properties belonging to ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif's family. On this, Justice Bashir chose to prematurely halt court proceedings for the day and asked both defendants to leave the courtroom and return for a hearing on October 19.Talking to the media, Maryam Nawaz asked the Interior Ministry to come up with a strategy to avoid occurrence of such events in future.

On July 28, a five-judge larger bench of the Supreme Court, while disqualifying Sharif under Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution had asked the NAB to file four references in the Rawalpindi accountability court within six weeks on the basis of the material collected and referred to by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) as well as that already available with the Federal Investigation Agency and the NAB. He claimed that the situation took serious turn when lawyers were barred from attending proceedings at the NAB court. Sharif again failed to appear before the judge as he was in London with his ailing wife Kulsoom.

"It should have been avoided", she said. Speaking to the media, she said, "I don't know who created the problems for the lawyers".

In the last hearing, the court had declared Hasan and Hussain Nawaz - Nawaz Sharif's sons - as absconders, besides approving the bail of Maryam and Safdar after they appeared in court.

TV footages showed that Maryam and Safdar were present inside the court when lawyers created ruckus. The law enforcers also accused the lawyers of manhandling them. However, Nawaz Sharif did not appear before the court on Friday.

The Sharif family's petition states that conducting several trial on one allegation violates the basic rights of the petitioners.
