Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah reach agreement in Cairo

Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah reach agreement in Cairoā€¯

The deal envisages that the national unity government will have full powers in all Palestinian territories - in the West Bank and Gaza - by December 1.

In 2014 a deal was struck, however Hamas reneged on the agreement and continued to rule over Gaza.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said he wants weapons to be under unified control.

A split between Palestine's two major forces, Fatah and Hamas, occurred after the parliamentary elections in Palestine in 2006 when Hamas won.

The meetings in Cairo are centred around implementing the 2011 Cairo Agreement between the two political parties, in hopes of ending the 10-year political schism.

The agreement is believed to include transfering administration of the border crossing between Gaza strip and Egypt to a unity government.

"All the measures taken recently will end very shortly", Zakaria al-Agha, a senior Fatah leader in the Gaza Strip, told AFP.

He added that sanctions taken by Abbas against Gaza will also soon be lifted.

Islamist movement Hamas is blacklisted as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union. Direct negotiations began on Tuesday, with a marathon second day stretching into the early hours of Thursday.

Repeated reconciliation attempts have failed since 2007. Hamas and Israel fought three devastating wars over the past decade.

Saleh al-Arouri, deputy head of Hamas's influential Political Bureau, also voiced appreciation for the role played by Egypt in sponsoring inter-Palestinian dialogue.

One of the key sticking points will be the fate of Hamas's 25,000-strong military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met with Sissi in NY last month, denounced the reconciliation efforts, saying any future Palestinian government must disband the Hamas terror group's armed wing and sever its ties with Iran.
