Kurdish vote triggers Iran-Iraq exercises, trip to Teheran by Turkey's Erdogan

Kurdish vote triggers Iran-Iraq exercises, trip to Teheran by Turkey's Erdogan”

Iran's Supreme Leader has described Kurdistan's independence referendum as an act of "treason" that must be confronted.

"We will not accept changing borders in the region", Rouhani said at a news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran.

Rouhani also declared his opposition to an independent Kurdish state, even as he said that his country "does not mean any harm" to the Kurdish population.

Erdogan, in a translation on Iranian state television of his comments, warned of "stronger" measures to follow and said the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq would remain "isolated".

Erdoğan also said they made a decision to conduct trade with Iran in local currencies.

Fearing Kurdish separatism within their own borders, Iran and Turkey have launched joint military exercises with Iraqi troops at their borders with the region.

Iran has ordered a halt to all trade in fuel products with Iraqi Kurdistan and has said it will allow Iraqi federal forces to deploy at its border crossings with the region.

Shamkhani also stressed the need for coordinated efforts among Tehran, Baghdad and Ankara to manage developments and prevent the negative effect of the independence vote on the fight against terrorism in Iraq.

Turkey is honest in voicing opposition to Iran's some policies, particularly in Syria, Iraq, and Gulf region, Cavusoglu said.

In addition to northern Iraq, the crisis in Syria is expected to be discussed. The two countries support opposing sides of the civil war. Some of the accused said they did not believe the court could deliver a fair verdict and had been under political pressure.

"The political, economic and worldwide relations between Iran and Turkey are in a good position, but we should strive to advance military and defense cooperation consistent with other fields", Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tuesday after his meeting with the Turkish top general.

The visiting Chief of the General Staff of Turkey Hulusi Akar and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri called for the boost of ties and the reinforcement of security cooperation.

The atmosphere for the talks was a far cry from Erdogan's last visit to Tehran in April 2015 when a speech he gave just days before sparked demands from some Iranian lawmakers for it to be cancelled.
