"Act of terrorism" in Edmonton: five wounded, including one policeman

Police found a flag of the Islamic State militant group inside the auto that struck the traffic officer, Canadian broadcasters CBC and CTV reported.

The Edmonton Police Service said in a statement it believed the suspect acted alone, although the investigation is in its early stages.

The attacks in Edmonton started outside a football game on Saturday night, when a police officer was struck by a auto and then stabbed several times.

Police have charged a Somali refugee who they say attacked an officer and ran down pedestrians with a truck - but are holding off on terrorism charges for now.

Police investigate at the scene where a man hit pedestrians, then flipping the U-Haul truck he was driving, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Oct. 1, 2017.

A driver of a Chevy Malibu rammed the auto into a police officer handling crowd control outside Commonwealth Stadium.

A 30-year-old Somalian refugee has now been charged with five counts of attempted murder in the attack that saw an Edmonton police officer stabbed and four other people hit by a rental truck.

Two of the four pedestrians remain in hospital, one with a fractured skull.

The van driver was arrested after a police chase.

"The Government of Canada and Canadians stand with the people of Edmonton after the terrorist attack on Saturday", Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday."We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities", he added.

"It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related", he said.

Edmonton police continue to maintain that - for now - Saturday's terrorist attack was an isolated incident and that the suspect acted on his own.

The driver got out, pulled out a large knife and began stabbing Const. Mike Chernyk, a 10-year veteran, as he was lying on the ground.

It was the latest in a series of assaults around the world that the authorities have labelled as terrorism, including a blast on a commuter train in London last month and Sunday's knife attack at the Saint Charles train station in Marseille, France.

"It's something that you have nothing to do with it, but at the same time, you have some kind of association with it", Mr. Abdulkadir said in an interview on Monday, in offices just a few blocks from where Constable Chernyk was hit and stabbed.

Police arrested the suspect after the vehicle flipped over during the pursuit. "I am deeply concerned and outraged by this tragedy", says Trudeau. "It just came around the corner, ripping".

Police have described the man as a lone-wolf attacker.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said on Twitter that her thoughts are with the injured officer and she's hoping for a speedy recovery.

"We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities".
