Russell Westbrook extension 'absolutely' factors into future — Paul George

Russell Westbrook extension 'absolutely' factors into future — Paul George”

Westbrook officially put pen to paper Friday afternoon, extending with the Oklahoma City Thunder on a five-year, $205 million deal.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal.

According to ESPN the agreement with the reigning MVP will run for five years and is worth $205million, which would outstrip the renewal Stephen Curry signed with the Golden State Warriors in July.

Westbrook signed the extension on Durant's 29th birthday.

"I felt he was [committed here] but that's again, everybody has to make - they have their obligations, they have to make their decisions on their own", George said. The risk in trading for George and Anthony is that both can leave in free agency next summer.

Westbrook will make a total of US$233 million (AU$297 million) over the next six years - the biggest guaranteed contract in National Basketball Association history.

The Thunder acquired Westbrook, a UCLA standout, with the No. 4 overall pick at the 2018 NBA Draft.

Primarily because of Westbrook, the Thunder's marketability was sustained even after Durant left. Oklahoma City now has a variety of offensive looks, incorporating George's versatile two-way game and Anthony's isolation scoring alongside Westbrook's thousand-miles-an-hour downhill attack.

OKC Thunder fans cheer for Russell Westbrook, the saving grace of the organization. A league MVP, a guy that averaged a triple-double a year ago, just got not only paid, but paid big. Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Houston Rockets, Westbrook single-handily carried the Thunder to the playoffs in a ferocious Western Conference. Earlier, it was reported that Westbrook was having second thoughts about signing a long-term deal with the Thunder as he was also interested in joining James in Los Angeles. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same.

"I wish I could tell you that any of us had any idea that he would become the player that he has developed into", Thunder General Manager and Executive Vice President Sam Presti said.

After all, from a financial perspective, there may be no more reason for Westbrook to hold out on signing the contract extension.
