Michelle Williams in talks for Venom”

Sony's upcoming Venom movie is reportedly close to casting an Oscar-nominated actress for a lead role opposite Tom Hardy.

The film's cast also includes Riz Ahmed, who is believed to be playing Cletus Cassidy, the serial killer who becomes Venom's archnemesis Carnage. The report, which comes to us from Variety, says that the studio has been making the rounds to several actresses in the last month or so, and Williams might just be the one to win the role. Since then, she's been acclaimed for her roles in films like Brokeback Mountain and My Week with Marilyn earning a Golden Globe for the latter. Back in March, our friends at Collider revealed that the studio and Marvel had reached an agreement to launch a new Marvel Universe that "will not be connected to the MCU" in any shape or form.

First introduced as an independent character in a 1988 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, Venom started off as a telepathically controlled, alien costume worn by Spider-Man's alter ego, Peter Parker.

A little confused? Sony owned the film rights to Spider-Man and all his related supporting characters since the early 2000s, but after the studio struck a deal with Marvel in 2015 allowing Marvel Studios to use him in the MCU, the webslinger became a little too booked by Marvel to become the focal point of a new cinematic universe - which Sony still meant to launch. This is obviously a major get for Sony, which views Venom as the kickoff to a major web of interconnected movies.

Are you excited for Venom and would you like to see She-Venom?

Hardy is set to play Eddie Brock in the film, with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) set to direct in what is being called a horror film-like take on the Spider-Man antagonist and sometime antihero. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing.

Venom previously appeared on the big screen, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

Venom is set to hit theaters October 5, 2018.
