Top Hizbul Mujahideen commander killed in Uri encounter”

Najar was active in Kashmir for the last seventeen years and was allegedly involved in over 50 killings, J&K police said. Besides ground troops, the army also put a helicopter and large number of sniffer dogs into service to trace other militants who are believed to be still hiding in the area.

The killed terrorist has been identified as Abdul Qayoom Najar.

Giving details about the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant commander's death, Hussain said Nazar was baptized into militancy in 1999 when he killed Abdul Majid Dar, the then estranged operational commander of the group. Three hours later, a mobile tower in the city was attacked, injuring two civilians. The man behind this new outfit was Najar. The flashpoint came in May 2015, sources said, when Najar and his associate Imtiyaz Kundoo threatened mobile operators in Sopore town and started killing people, including local Hurriyat leader Sheikh Altaf ur Rehman. Qayoom launched a series of attacks on telecom installations in north Kashmir in 2015 including one barely few hundred metres from Srinagar's civil secretariat which houses the office of Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, the cabinet ministers and top civil administration officers.

Najar, alias Jasahib alias Ishfaq, a "commander" of the terror outfit, was coming to "take over" charge of its operations in the Valley, a police officer said.

"Security agencies kept on receiving regular inputs about the infiltration of militants along the LoC in Uri". He was involved in a lot of IED explosions because he was an IED expert. Najar joined militancy when he was 16 and was arrested in 1992. Neutralising him would have been very hard as he was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan, Pattan, Handwara areas of Bandipora and Baramulla. "Najar was recalled to the base camp at Muzaffarabad in PoK to sort out differences", a source said.

Police said that relations between Najar and Salahuddin had soured since 2014, after he demanded more money for militant operations in the Valley.
