More than 60 years after Israel, Palestine joins Interpol

More than 60 years after Israel, Palestine joins Interpol”

Interpol announced the inclusion of the "State of Palestine" as well as the Solomon Islands on Twitter and its website after a vote by its general assembly in Beijing.

The PA has also pursued similar goals at the International Criminal Court, where it seeks "to improperly use international law as a tool to bring about the establishment of a Palestinian state with or without Israel's consent", David Daoud assessed in a May 2015 article in The Tower.

In a secret ballot at Interpol's annual conference, 75 countries voted in favor of adding Palestine - and 24 opposed the move.

Israel argued that Palestinian inclusion in Interpol would endanger Israeli military officials and politicians, who could face arbitrary global arrest orders, and would put at risk classified intelligence shared among the organization's 192 member states, allowing it to be transmitted to Palestinian terrorists.

Israeli Foreign Ministry, which said earlier that Israel's efforts to delay a vote until next year had failed, had no immediate comment on the decision.

"It was a hard effort, but it produced results", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared happily at the time. In the eyes of many governments across the globe, Palestinian statehood is inevitable, and they feel they need to vote accordingly in worldwide forums.

In 2012, the U.N. General Assembly upgraded the Palestinian Authority's observer status at the United Nations to "non-member state" from "entity", like the Vatican.

To join the world's second-largest organization after the United Nations, the Palestinians needed two-thirds of all votes cast - they received three-quarters.

"At Interpol, we aim to facilitate global police cooperation even where diplomatic relations do not exist between particular countries", it says in a statement on its website.

In this photo provided by Interpol, delegates are seated for the 86th session of the General Assembly, in Beijing, China, Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017. It claimed victory a year ago when the Palestinian bid to join the global police body was suspended.

"The Palestinians have clearly not met the standards set by Interpol in contributing to make the world a safer place, in fact the opposite remains true", Heideman said.

A previous attempt to join Interpol was thwarted during the previous general assembly in Indonesia, when the body chose to postpone any vote on accepting new members.
