Londoners Reveal Their Thoughts On The Uber Ban”

Lyft, Uber's closest United States rival in the taxi-hailing business, met repeatedly with officials from London's transport regulator over the past year, a sign it may be targeting the city for worldwide expansion. "Even though there is a legal process in place, I have asked TfL to make themselves available to meet with him", he added, using the abbreviation for the transit agency.

"Obviously I am pleased that he has acknowledged the issues that Uber faces in London", Khan said in a statement.

The city's move was a huge loss for the ride-hailing company: London is Uber's largest European market and hosts some 40,000 licensed Uber drivers who serve about 3.5 million customers.

Uber can appeal the decision, and will be able to operate until all forms of appeal have been exhausted.

Khosrowshahi, the former CEO of travel website Expedia, replaced Uber founder Travis Kalanick as CEO just three weeks ago and he's got several major diplomatic battles to fight all over the world. Uber has now apologised for its mistakes in an open letter and has offered to make changes and address the various criticisms. More than 625,000 people have since signed a "Save Your Uber in London" petition calling on the mayor of London Sadiq Khan to reverse the decision as the company prepares to appeal against the decision.

The firm has until 14 October to formally appeal TfL's decision and the case is likely to be filed at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. London's taxi regulator, Transport for London, announced Friday that Uber's license would not be renewed.

London's Mayor, who chairs the TFL board, backed the decision.

According to the Press Association, the Mayor of London "welcomed" the apology. "They have let down their drivers and customers by failing, in the view of TfL, to act as a fit and proper operator".

Uber's license to operate in the capital city ends on September 30, 2017.

The new rules, which Uber lobbied the Ministry of Transport for, include cheaper and faster P endorsements for drivers to allow them to carry passengers legally.

Previously, Uber was made to admit that it used Greyball, a secret program to avoid law enforcement. "It's been wonderful to hear your stories of Uber improving lives across this city-from drivers who use our app to earn a living, to riders who rely on us to get home safely after a night out".

Past year the United Kingdom courts ruled that Uber drivers should be considered employees, forming a landmark decision that could have implications for other gig economy services. In May of 2016, all ride-sharing apps including both Uber and Lyft completely ceased operations in Austin because of Uber and Lyft not fingerprinting their prospective drivers while Austin voters upheld a rule that would require Uber, Lyft and other transportation network companies there to do fingerprint-based background checks of their drivers, among other things.
