Jennifer Lopez Donates $1M to Puerto Rico Recovery Efforts”

Taking a shot at President Donald Trump, the governor said, "instead of arguing with football players, instead of obsessing about how to take health care from the poor in this country, why don't we put the politics aside and focus on helping Americans in desperate need".

Puerto Rico's agriculture secretary, Carlos Flores Ortega, estimates Hurricane Maria wiped out 80% of the value of the island's crops in a matter of hours, worth $780 million, says the New York Times.

Ricardo Rosselló, the governor of Puerto Rico, has called for a greater federal response to the disaster, which left at least 13 people dead.

With the help of U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez and United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, a plane of supplies also is on its way to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican authorities said the death toll there has risen to 16, up from 10 previously.

A handful of stars with connections to Puerto Rico joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at a press conference Sunday to draw attention to the severity of the damage, Deadline reported Sunday, including Jennifer Lopez and Rosie Perez.

Trump hasn't addressed Puerto Rico on Twitter since last Wednesday.

"Part of the island is lacking communications so what we have are some preliminary assessments about 13 deaths at this juncture", he told CNN. She also took to Instagram asking for help from her followers to spread the word about providing aid for the island in light of Hurricane Maria's aftermath. Even before the storm, Puerto Rico was in financial dire straits. She said and others in the NY delegation will be advocating for federal funding to swiftly fix and rebuild Puerto Rico's electrical grid, help small businesses recover and address other problems. Lives have been lost. The ship has since been used to respond to Hurricane Irma and Maria.

With its airports and harbors severely damaged, as well as a number of major highways, Puerto Rico is more isolated than ever-making it all the more challenging for an island in urgent need of aid to provide for its most vulnerable residents, according to the report.

Officials warn it may take up to six months to fully restore power. This is the strongest hurricane to strike Puerto Rico in almost 90 years, and the consequences have been disastrous. In Isabela, the mayor's office said a little more than 200 people were in shelters.

"We also know that given the financial pressures that the island was under before, it makes the task even more hard", he said.
