Tesla is working with AMD to build a custom-made AI chip

Tesla is working with AMD to build a custom-made AI chip”

GlobalFoundries, which fabricates chips, has a wafer supply agreement in place with AMD through 2020.

It looks like AMD might have scored a seriously large contract through electric auto maker Tesla Motors, with the companies collaborating on a new AI accelerator for self-driving cars. The electric carmaker has apparently already received the first samples of its processor prototype for testing, according to the report. The company is reportedly building its chip on top of AMD technology and is even working with AMD spin-off and chip fabricator GlobalFoundries to make its vision a reality.

The sources go on to state that more than 50 individuals are part of the team working on this project under Tesla's head of autopilot hardware and software Jim Keller; he joined the company early a year ago.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously asserted that totally autonomous driving would be available to consumers by sometime in 2019. He joined Tesla early past year and is now the head of Autopilot hardware.

Tesla, AMD, and GlobalFoundries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

AMD shares were up 2.2 percent in extended trading.

Tesla's Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles use Nvidia Corp's products for their self-driving capabilities. Tesla has brought in several AMD veterans after Keller was hired.

"It's definitely been a tough slog transitioning from the Mobileye vision chip to Tesla's internal vision system, but I think we're nearly there in terms of exceeding the ability of the hardware one cars", Musk said during a meeting with shareholders in early June. Intel bought Mobileye in March for $15.3 billion in order to further its own autonomous-car project.

It comes a day after Intel has announced it is teaming up with with Alphabet's Waymo self-driving unit.
