Hundreds of buildings toppled in deadly Mexico quakeā€¯

The natural disaster struck exactly 32 years after an 8.0 temblor killed almost 10,000 people in and around Mexico City.

Less than two weeks after getting hit by a major quake, leaving 90 dead, the earth shook yet again in Mexico.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said that among those killed were 22 children from the Enrique Rebsamen School in southern Mexico City, while 38 were still missing. The public school is for children aged 3 to 14.

Dozens of police, rescue workers and neighbors dug through the wreckage of collapsed buildings in Mexico City.

Volunteers, rescue teams, soldiers are working to rescue people trapped in the debris.

Meanwhile, the Palace assured that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is closely monitoring the situation to make sure that all Filipinos in Mexico are safe. Parents clung to hope that their children were alive.

"We can hear small noises, but we don't know if they're coming from above or below, from the walls above (crumbling), or someone below calling for help", he said.

Family members are gathering to scour lists of names to see if they're loved ones have been accounted for.

"Some of the buildings are on old lake beds, and that can amplify the shaking and cause the shaking to last longer, and that can make for more damage", Hudnut told VOA.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was near Puebla state town of Raboso, around 123 kilometers southeast of Mexico City.

Moises Amador Mejia, a 44-year-old employee of the civil protection agency, worked late into the night looking for people trapped in a collapsed building in Mexico City's bohemian Condesa neighborhood.

LATA understands that Mexico City airport was closed temporarily, due to damage in one of the terminals, but has now reopened.

On Tuesday, September 19, an quake of 7.1 magnitude shook the country.

"Yesterday a awful quake struck Mexico - I see there are many Mexicans among you today - resulting in numerous victims and material damage", the pope told the crowd in the square.
