Powerful Hurricane Maria targets Caribbean, Puerto Rico

Powerful Hurricane Maria targets Caribbean, Puerto Rico”

The Dutch navy tweeted that troops were heading to the two tiny neighbouring islands of Saba and St Eustatius to ensure security following widespread complaints after the first hurricane of looting and lawlessness on St Martin, among the worst hit by Irma, with 14 killed. "Maria is developing the dreaded pinhole eye, " the center warned.

"So far, we have lost all what money can buy and replace", wrote Skerrit on Facebook regarding the devastation the late-night storm has wreaked on the Caribbean island.

Dominica's Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said at a news conference today, "This is not a time for heroism".

"We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds", the prime minister wrote.

Several of those islands were devastated earlier this month when Hurricane Irma rampaged through the Caribbean as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded, killing more than 80 people on the islands and the USA mainland.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. update for Maria, The Category 5 storm packed 160 miles per hour winds and was heading toward Puerto Rico.

The Caribbean is in for another possible hurricane.

Maria could be a direct threat Tuesday to Montserrat and Saint Kitts and Nevis, and by Wednesday to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, according to the French meteorological service.

With maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 km per hour), the storm slammed into the island as a Category 5 hurricane. There is a possibility that Puerto Rico will be hit on Wednesday, according to theBoston Globe. A police official on the island, Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste, said late Monday night that there were no immediate reports of casualties but it was too unsafe for officers to check conditions. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Rob Miller said, however, that the storm will most likely take a course similar to Hurricane Jose, which swept north and had only an indirect impact on the USA coastline. Ten to 15 inches of rain was expected in the central and southern Leeward Islands through Tuesday with isolated accumulations of up to 20 inches.

Hurricane watches have been issued for the USA and British Virgin Islands, while a hurricane warning has been issued for Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands, according to WFSB.com.
