Wenger prefers top-four finish over Europa League glory

Wenger prefers top-four finish over Europa League glory”

Arsene Wenger insists he will not use the Europa League as an excuse for a poor performance when Arsenal play rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

They still have some able players to call upon though.

The Gunners haven't actually won a European title since 1994, when they were victorious in the European Cup Winners' Cup, so there is every chance that the Gunners will take this competition very seriously. Manager Jose Mourinho made winning the competition a priority as United slipped to a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League.

However, Alexis Sanchez is likely to start the match, after training in the last three days following his appearance off the bench against Bournemouth.

"It was a good way to prove that we have just had two bad games and we have to move on". Wednesday night or Thursday night is no problem.

"He needs a little burst to get away from people because he can turn the game forward, and if you can turn the game forward you need your legs to get you out of pressure and that will come back - it is coming back in training as well".

Asked if he can get back to his best, Wenger replied: "Yes, if he is injury-free he will come back".

After a poor start to the season Hector Bellerin believes that Arsenal should take inspiration in what Chelsea achieved last season from a similar start.

On whether long time absentee Jack Wilshere will play against Cologne, Wenger said he is yet to decide.

"The disadvantage is of course that he was out of the game for a long time, but there are advantages as well", he said.

Giroud netted his 99th Arsenal goal in the dramatic 4-3 win over Leicester on the opening day of the Premier League season, but has been a substitute in every game so far after losing his starting role to new signing Alexandre Lacazette.

The Hard Tackle, therefore, predicts a hard-fought 1-0 win for the North London outfit to kickstart their Europa League campaign on a positive note.
