Air Berlin cancels dozens of flights

Air Berlin cancels dozens of flights”

Air Berlin, Germany's second largest carrier, has been forced to suspend over a hundreds flights after a large portion of its pilots failed to report for duty.

Lufthansa's low-priced division Eurowings - which is wet-leasing Airbus A320-family jets from Air Berlin - has been affected.

About 200 of Air Berlin's 1,500 pilots reported being ill.

"Passengers holding tickets for cancelled flights will be offered other travel options", the website states.

German press estimated that over 100 national and global flights were to be grounded, affecting schedules at Berlin's Tegel airport, Düsseldorf, Munich and others.

It prompted the airline to accuse them of sabotaging rescue talks with potential investors.

"This day is costing us several million euros", Winkelmann said in a statement. "A stable operation is mandatory for these negotiations to succeed".

Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy on August 15 after losing support of its former shareholder, nited Arab Emirates' Etihad Airways. "That's the only way we can secure as many jobs as possible".

This has the potential to unsettle any potential rescuers for Air Berlin, which filed for administration last month when it was given a €150m (£135m) loan by the German government.

Pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit says it is "surprised" by the cancellations and stresses that it has not called on its members to call in sick.

The move has also hit Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings, which said it had been told by Air Berlin at short notice some of the flights the latter carrier runs for it could not be staffed.
