Parts of Miami looked like rivers as Irma rolled through

Parts of Miami looked like rivers as Irma rolled through”

"There is a sense of relief because we were told we'd get a direct hit ... we're concerned about storm surge", Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado told the Miami Herald.

The city fire department says they're aware, and trying to warn residents to stay away from the area, but it's now too risky for first responders to assess the situation.

City officials warned residents living in downtown near construction sites about the possibility of cranes collapsing.

Despite officials calling for more than 6 million people in Florida and Georgia to evacuate in advance of Irma's storm surge and fierce winds, some around Florida are choosing to stay, a rite of passage for many in the state who boast about the storms they weathered: Camille, Andrew, Katrina and others.

Soon after one of the cranes collapsed, the chief executive of the company developing the building told Reuters he was attending the U.S. Open tennis tournament in NY when the accident occurred and had just learned about it.

No injuries were reported after either crash, said Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso.

OSHA's communications office did not return a call on Sunday afternoon.

A crane at a Related Group project in Fort Lauderdale went down later on Sunday, Perez said.

Jose, which was upgraded to an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane Friday with 150 miles per hour winds, is following Irma's path and is forecast to come close to the already decimated Leeward Islands, including St. Martin and Barbuda.

During that time, a resident said he heard a loud boom and looked out of the apartment to see the crane falling. "Consider that the counterbalances on tower cranes weigh about 20,000 to 30,000 pounds". That is about as much as 10 Honda Civics, and it means the cranes can not be moved on a dime.

As Hurricane Irma continues to wreak havoc toward northern Florida, its floodwaters have inundated the streets of Miami, making the city completely unrecognizable. "We will have a crew over to secure the crane as soon as the weather permits".

"But as they learn more and more about the catastrophic hurricane that's coming our way, more and more folks are seeking shelter", he said.
