Anderson wins first US Open semifinal

Anderson wins first US Open semifinal”

Kevin Anderson has marched into the first Grand Slam final of his long career.

Kevin Anderson produced an excellent fightback from a set down to reach his first grand slam final by defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 at the US Open.

While victories over JC Aragone, Ernests Gulbis, Borna Coric and the unsafe Paolo Lorenzi were all high quality, it was the quarter-finals here he really appeared to hit his stride.

The 6-foot-8 South African is the first man from his country to reach the US Open semifinals since Johan Kriek in 1980, and looks to become the first, male or female, to reach the final since ESPN analyst Cliff Drysdale in 1965.

"I don't know if the team hug was appropriate after the semi-finals, but it felt like the right thing to do", he said.

Kevin Anderson's mother says it's a dream come true to see her son on the cusp of South African tennis history. With neither of them able to find any more breakthroughs on the return, Carreno Busta ultimately served out the first set 6-4 after 33 minutes of play.

Stephens, who returned to competition at Wimbledon after almost a year off because of a foot injury, recovered from a second-set meltdown to end ninth seed Williams's hopes of reaching a third major final this year.

The ninth-seeded Williams meets No. 13 Petra Kvitova on Tuesday night in a quarterfinal matchup of former Grand Slam champions.

But that was sufficient as 6ft 8in (2.03m) Anderson committed 14 unforced errors as he dropped serve for just the fourth time in the championships. It was an unbelievably tough match for me.

The No. 12-seeded Carreno Busta had won his first 16 sets in the tournament before the 28th-seeded Anderson started finding the range on his power shots late in the second set, capitalizing when Carreno Busta double-faulted to give him set point trailing 5-6.

It has been noticeable at the US Open how pumped up he has been throughout the event, something Tiley said reminded him of Anderson's college days.

A 20th ace of the match from Anderson wrapped up the third, with his command furthered in the fourth as he moved within three games of victory when Carreno Busta went wide with a forehand.

The No. 28 seed Anderson had been broken only three times in his first 90 service games in the tournament. "It's little things", Anderson said.

Carreno Busta displayed great resilience to save two break points at 4-3 down, but Anderson's persistence paid off in the final game of the set as he broke courtesy of angled backhand.

The Swiss-British pair won the Wimbledon title earlier this year.

Del Potro has been virtually running on empty.
