Jose continues to strengthen after turning into hurricane”

Katia strengthened into a hurricane on September 6 at 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. EDT).

Jose's projected path would take it near or just north of the Leeward Islands late this week, less than a week after major Hurricane Irma hits the same area, AccuWeather said.

As of 11 a.m. AST, Jose was about 715 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

Jose is expected to gain strength in the Caribbean and move west. While Harvey moved north, bringing its destruction to Texas, projections are that Katia sticking close to Mexico, making landfall on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Beginning as Tropical Depression 13, the storm formed Tuesday in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, strengthening into Tropical Storm Katia Wednesday morning.

The NHC has not yet issued a hurricane warning or watch for Katia but could issue one for parts of Veracruz later today.

Here's a look at Hurricane Jose positioned next the two other hurricanes swirling through the Atlantic.

This development comes even as many Caribbean islands brace for the impact of Irma, now a Category 5 hurricane, with 175 miles per hour winds.

Hurricane Jose will likely become a hurricane before the end of the week, but it's most likely to stay in the middle of the Atlantic, far from land, and Hurricane Katia will landfall in Central Mexico at the start of the weekend. However, the hurricane is forecast to turn southwestward and approach the coast within the warning area late Friday or early Saturday.

Authorities struggled to provide aid to the small Caribbean islands due east, which had been devastated by the storm's record 185mph (298kph) winds. With maximum wind speeds of 40 miles per hour, it is now located off the east coast of Mexico.

The statistical peak of hurricane season is Sept 10.

Irma is now tracking over Puerto Rico, after having passed over Caribbean islands. The most updated forecast for the storm does not list any land hazards at this time, but said the Leeward Islands should monitor the storm's progress. Residents in Florida, meanwhile, waited to see whether they'd be evacuated from their homes depending on Irma's path.
