Pakistan rejects BRICS' anti-terrorism declaration

Pakistan rejects BRICS' anti-terrorism declaration”

The FO spokesman further added that Pakistan remains concerned at the rise of extremist ideologies and intolerance in the region which encourages social stratification and systematic targeting of minorities. He vowed not to be "silent about Pakistan's safe havens" for the Taliban, and other groups that pose a threat to the region and beyond.

The officials said Beijing had assured Pakistan that it would never support India against Pakistan. This is a case of China, which has repeatedly stymied efforts to sanction terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and especially Jaish-e-Mohammed in global forums, signing on to a formal statement condemning these very groups.

The minister mentioned the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) among those banned outfits.

The committee took strong notice of the hostile and threatening statement made by US President Donald Trump and top US commander in Afghanistan Gen Nicholson and adopted a condemnation resolution.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office on Wednesday, the minister will leave for Beijing on the first leg of his tour to the regional countries to garner support for Pakistan in the wake of the United States strategy announced by President Donald Trump last month.

"We deplore all terrorist attacks worldwide, including attacks in BRICS countries, and condemn terrorism in all its forms & manifestations wherever committed &by whomsoever & stress that there can be no justification", the declaration read. "We reaffirm that those responsible for committing, organising, or supporting terrorist acts must be held accountable".

The minister indicated that Pakistan could no longer afford to "test" friends such as China.

The Pentagon has long accused Pakistan of harboring numerous groups highlighted in the BRICS documents, including the terrorists who operate in Afghanistan, which also shares a direct border with China.

The civilian and military leadership were on the same page on the need to act against terror groups, he said.

China said today it has invited Pakistan's Foreign Minister for talks, in an apparent move to assuage Islamabad's concerns after the BRICS countries for the first time named Pakistan-based terrorist groups like LeT and JeM in the grouping's declaration.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will visit Beijing on Friday to discuss a range of issues with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, China said on Wednesday.

The Pakistani minister added that his country is not feeling threatened by the US following the harshly worded Trump speech.
