PM Modi to Attend BRICS Summit in China

PM Modi to Attend BRICS Summit in Chinaā€¯

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reached China to attend Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit.

Showcasing the importance of the event, India and China ended a months-long military standoff in the Himalayas days ahead of the summit. From Xiamen, he will travel to Myanmar on August 5 before returning to the country on August 7.

The three-day summit in Xiamen, a southeastern Chinese city in Fujian province, will begin even as authorities declared a high alert with Typhoon Mawar expected to hit the coastal region.

"South Africa looks forward to meeting with the like-minded Brics countries as it strongly believes that these engagements will contribute to finding innovative approaches and solutions to our identified triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality, as well as the development objectives of the global South", said presidency spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga. "I also look forward to productive discussions and positive outcomes that will support the agenda of a stronger BRICS partnership under the chairmanship of China". "There are certain developments in the world which are important to be addressed, and I'm sure, leaders in the BRICS meeting are bound to look at it, including the scourge of terrorism, which has been the most important subject for India", Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Preeti Saran said.

The Xiamen summit is being held on September 3-5 in a new so-called BRICS Plus format, with leaders of such non-BRICS countries as Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Guinea and Tajikistan also taking part.

Modi said during the visit, the two sides will review developments in bilateral relations, especially the extensive programme of development cooperation and socio-economic assistance that India is undertaking in Myanmar.

He hoped his visit will help in charting a roadmap for closer cooperation between the two countries.

The five countries now represent 44 percent of the world's population and 23 percent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) face a sluggish global economy and setbacks in globalization, the group turning 11 this year may put a new shine on emerging markets and developing countries, commented Xinhua news agency. New areas to work together will also be explored. "The global community should recognise the contributions and sacrifices made by Pakistan", said Hua.

The Chinese official said the decision was taken in order to strengthen further cooperation.
