Homes evacuated in Los Angeles's 'largest fire in history'

Homes evacuated in Los Angeles's 'largest fire in history'”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared an emergency in response to the largest wildfire in the U.S. city's history.

Firefighters had to evacuate people from their homes and also closed the 210 Freeway because of the uncontrollable fire, which spread in every direction.

A brush fire in Los Angeles burning near the 210 freeway is prompting road closures and nearby home evacuations.

Erratic wind and high temperatures have made fighting the blaze a hard task for firefighters.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas said it had been at least 30 years since the region was affected by a wildfire.

Homes in Burbank and Sunland-Tujunga were evacuated as a brush fire grew to 5,000 acres, which Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said was the largest fire by acreage in his city's history. The fire has been dubbed the La Tuna Fire, based on the canyon where it broke out Friday.

"We are anxious about the fire hooking, of course, into the southeast, into Glendale and working its way up from there", Garcetti said. Evacuations were lifted in Burbank but remain in effect in Glendale and Los Angeles.

The fire has not caused any injuries or property damage, Stewart said. The 210 Freeway, which the fire hopped over shortly after it ignited Friday, also remained closed Saturday.

Carol Smith, a National Weather Service meteorologist, told the Los Angeles Times that a combination of weather conditions were working against firefighters: temperatures of up to 106 degrees, 50-mph gusts of wind and unstable air.

Meanwhile in OR, 140 hikers were being evacuated Saturday after a fire broke out southeast of Portland near the Eagle Creek Trail. Firefighters initially feared the flames would reach homes by midnight Friday.

"It's very unsettling", she said as she watched, already having packed her vehicle in case officials ordered her street to evacuate.

Five thousand acres have now burned in the intense wildfire while containment remains at 10 percent.

"Being ready and set to go is what we try and preach to residents", he said.

Much of California was under an extreme heat warning through the weekend with temperatures hitting nearly triple digits in some places, according to the National Weather Service.

Los Angeles city and county agencies used 10 helicopters and two Super Scoopers to help fight the flames from the air.
