US Destroyer Shoots Down Missile in Test Off Hawai'i”

In addition, the U.S. military shot down a mediumrange ballistic missile target off the coast of Hawaii early Wednesday, in asuccessful test of a missile interception system Japan is seeking to bolster its defence against North Korea.

The vessel detected and tracked the target missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar, the statement read.

"We will continue developing ballistic missile defense technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolves", MDA director Sam Greaves said.

In June, the John Paul Jones failed to shoot down its target missile in a similar test off Hawaii.

The US regularly tests its missile-defence systems and this was the second time one of its Standard Missile-6 missiles successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile, the agency said. However, the August 30 test had been planned for a long time and before North Korea's latest missile launch.

Early on Tuesday, North Korea carried out a test which saw a ballistic missile fly over the Japanese island of Hokkaido and land in the Pacific Ocean after flying more than 2,700 kilometers (1700 miles). An earlier test of the same interceptor in February succeeded.

The U.S. military still has numerous missile defense assets - from Patriot interceptors to Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems - in the area though. It was the second missile test conducted by the USA military this month. President Donald Trump said "all options are on the table" in response to the test.

The test comes a day after Pyongyang test-launched a ballistic missile over Japan.

Separately, the MDA this week awarded Raytheon Missile Systems a $615 million contract, with $45 million in fiscal 2017 funding obligated initially, to produce 17 Standard Missile-3 Block IIA ballistic-missile interceptors and perform related work.
