Olympic runner David Torrence found dead in Scottsdale pool”

Former Cal athlete and Olympic middle-distance runner David Torrence was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in Arizona on Monday.

County Court Condominium employees found Torrence at 7:30 am and immediately called 911. "Detectives discovered that there were no obvious signs of attack", he said.

Torrence was born in Okinawa, Japan, and was raised in the United States. He signed a professional contract with Nike and went on to win multiple USA titles on the track and on the roads.

Fellow athletes took to Twitter and paid tributes to Torrence. According to Wikipedia, he held the American record in the 1,000-meter indoor race.

A native of California, Torrence won silver for the US at the World Relay Championships in 2014 and finished second at the Pan American Games in 2015.

"He competed for Peru (birth place of his mother) in the 2016 International Olympics in Rio", the Rotary newsletter notes. Earlier this month, Torrence competed in the 800 and 1,500 for Peru at the world championships in London.

Gabriele Grunewald, the former national indoor champion in the 3,000-meter who represented the U.S.at the 2014 world indoor championships, tweeted, "I am absolutely broken hearing about David Torrence".
