House Dems Call On Trump To Reverse Transgender Military Ban”

"The President's order to remove transgender service members from the United States armed forces and deny them healthcare is nothing less than a purge", Matt Thorn, executive director of OutServe-SLDN, a group dedicated to LGBT equality in the military, said in a statement. "This harmful purge is yet another baseless attack from the Trump administration on LGBT people", Lambda Legal Staff Attorney Sasha Buchert told CBS News on Tuesday.

Last month, after Trump signaled, in a Twitter post, his intention to ban transgendered people, Soto released a statement that included, "There are over 15,000 transgender military service men and women now risking their lives every day protecting our country".

"This boycott not just wrongfully averts enthusiastic, gifted Americans from serving, it additionally bargains the wellbeing and security of our nation", Lambda Legal senior lawyer Peter Renn said in an announcement. "Thousands of current service members are transgender..." The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.

"The Trump organization has given no confirmation that this declaration depended on an investigation of the genuine cost and interruption professedly caused by permitting men and ladies who are transgender to serve transparently", ACLU attorneys said.

The memo delivered to Secretary of Defense James Mattis instructed the Pentagon to return to the June 2016 policy that prevented the recruitment of transgender people into the armed forces and to stop the use of Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security funds to provide "sex reassignment surgical procedures for military personnel".

The ACLU complaint calls the new policy a betrayal to existing service members who came out publicly to military personnel after a directive issued a year ago by President Barack Obama's defense secretary, Ashton Carter. The White House has declined to comment on the pending litigation, according to the Reuters news agency.

The ACLU announced Monday morning that it would challenge the directive in court, arguing that it violates "the constitutional guarantees of equal protection and substantive due process by singling out transgender individuals for unequal and discriminatory treatment", according to a press release.

The Seattle-based Gender Justice League and several local transgender people who either want to join the military or who now serve in the armed forces have filed a lawsuit in federal court, according to a news release Monday.

"President Trump can try to impose this transgender ban, but we will fight him every step of the way". "The same RAND Corporation study suggests that if transgender individuals were officially allowed to serve openly, the annual cost of resultant gender transition-related medical costs would likely not exceed $8.4 million".

The ACLU has filed a similar suit in Maryland on behalf of six active-duty service members.

Another lawsuit filed by the National Center for Lesbian Rights and GLBTQ Advocates & Defenders was filed before Trump's directive and remains pending before a federal court in D.C.
