Rohingya tell of fleeing Myanmar for lives, United Nations says 3000 left”

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the attacks underscored the importance of the government implementing recommendations of a commission chaired by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, which published its final report on Thursday recommending that the government act quickly to improve economic development and social justice in Rakhine state to resolve violence between Buddhists and the Rohingya.

Win Myat Aye, Myanmar's minister for social welfare, relief and resettlement, told Reuters late on Saturday that 4,000 "ethnic villagers" who had fled their villages had been evacuated, referring to non-Muslim residents of the area. Myanmar's security forces responded by launching counterterrorism operations against insurgents.

The Myanmar government says the death toll from violence due to coordinated attacks by Rohingya guerrillas has risen to 98 people, with 80 militants and 12 members of the security forces.

The state counsellor's office has also ordered the country's media to use the term "terrorist" rather than "insurgent" to describe Rohingya militants, a move that reaffirms the widely held belief that the former Nobel Peace Prize victor is unlikely to take any public stance against the military's actions in the country's troubled northwest.

He said the foreign ministry also protested Myanmar's description of such elements as "Bengal terrorists" as "they are actually Myanmar nationals and no Bangladeshi penetrated the Myanmar border to carry out such activities".

Nur, the Rohingya leader, said Bangladeshi authorities had asked him and his associates to "discourage" their people in Myanmar from leaving the country.

The statement says they hope that the State will take into consideration the safety and security of the civilian communities in this just war.

The influx follows a fresh outbreak of fighting between Rohingya militants and Myanmar troops in Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh.

Those who have got through took refuge in the mostly makeshift camps in the coastal town of Cox's Bazar, where some 400,000 Rohingya are already living after fleeing previous bouts of violence in Rakhine.

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) on Sunday voiced concern over the plight of Rohingya population following the attacks in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

However, an estimated 2,000 Rohingyas have made the crossing since Friday. Human rights groups accused the army of carrying out massive human rights abuses including killing, rape and burning down more than 1,000 homes and other buildings.

Abdur Rashid, another Rohingya farmer, described walking miles with his 10-year-old son to hospital in Bangladesh after the child was hit by a bullet in Myanmar.

After three years of Buddhist atrocities directed at Rohingyas, a radicalized group of Rohingyas formed the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

"It's burning, burning, people fleeing", she said adding she had just received reports that 14 Rohingya in one village had been killed, but as with all allegations from the cut-off area, these deaths and arson allegation were hard to verify.
