Abbas Presses for Two-State Solution, Kushner Provides No Clarity

Abbas Presses for Two-State Solution, Kushner Provides No Clarity”

The statement issued by the American Consulate in Jerusalem called the talks "productive" and asserted that "Both sides agreed to continue with the US-led conversations as the best way to reach a comprehensive peace deal". "We know that things are hard and complicated, but there is nothing impossible with good efforts".

The Palestinian administration had reportedly expressed pessimism at USA peace efforts, and Abbas had reportedly sought a US commitment to endorse the two-state solution.

Kushner, special representative for worldwide negotiations Jason Greenblatt and deputy national security advisor Dina Powell held talks with the PA president in Ramallah on Thursday after meeting with a number of Middle East leaders in the past several days.

But the US delegation refrained from committing to a two-state solution - the primary focus of peace efforts for decades.

"Today we understood more than ever that President Trump is indeed engaged [in the diplomatic process], he knows what his team is working on and what they are talking about, and he also found time despite the mess he is in to convey messages to Abbas", an unnamed Palestinian source told Al-Monitor.

However, Abbas stressed that negotiations should be based on the framework of a two-state solution and for illegal settlements to cease. That has rankled Palestinian officials, who say negotiations without any set parameters will only benefit the Israeli side.

According to Al-Hayat, a USA delegation headed by Kushner told Abbas this week that "stopping settlement construction is impossible because it will cause the collapse of the Netanyahu government".

News about the outcomes of the meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and the United States delegation hit the front pages of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.

A small group of demonstrators gathered in Ramallah as the meeting took place Thursday, protesting a delegation that is widely seen as biased toward Israel. They talked to us about incitement.

"We have told the Americans that we are committed to the American effort،" Khatib said.

Netanyahu said such a deal was "within our reach" and promised to work with the Trump administration "to advance peace, stability and security in our region". "They don't talk about the principle of two countries, they come after having adopted the claims of the Israelis", said Aloul.

"Without a vision it will be negotiations for negotiations sake", Khatib said.
