'No Rohingya to be allowed into Bangladesh'

'No Rohingya to be allowed into Bangladesh'”

Eighty-nine people, including 12 security officials, were killed as Rohingya militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine state, Myanmar's authorities said yesterday - the worst violence in months to hit the febrile zone.

In response, the Myanmar military sent troops fanning out into Rohingya villages in an offensive beset by allegations of arson, killings and rape by the security forces which sent 87,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.

"The extremist Bengali insurgents attacked a police station in Maungdaw region in northern Rakhine state with a handmade bomb explosive and held coordinated attacks on several police posts at 1am [local time]", the statement read.

The death toll from widespread attacks staged by Rohingya insurgents on Friday has climbed to 96, including almost 80 insurgents and 12 members of the security forces, the government said, prompting it to evacuate staff and villagers from some areas.

The UN has condemned the attack and called for "all parties to refrain from violence, protect civilians and restore order".

Zaman said that thousands of unarmed civilians including women, children and elderly people from the Rakhine State had assembled close to the border and were making attempts to enter Bangladesh.

"We are running for our lives", said one of the Zay Di Pyin's Rohingya villagers reached by telephone, adding that houses had been set on fire.

So far, seven bodies of the terrorists have been recovered and security forces are in pursuit of other attackers, the statement said.

"[The] final goal is to destabilise the state, to prevent the United Nations fact-finding mission, not to implement the Rakhine commission's recommendations and, most importantly, to further marginalise Rohingya".

Denied status as a recognized ethnic minority in Myanmar, most Rohingya eke out a stateless existence without civil rights or freedom of movement.

Bangladesh's border guards pushed back 146 Rohingya refugees who were coming to the country in the wake of fresh tensions between Rohingya insurgents and Myanmar security forces.

Two wounded Rohingya men from the bordering Rakhine state crossed into Bangladesh late Friday and got themselves admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 8am on Saturday, said police.

The secretary (Asia & Pacific) also emphasized on addressing the underlying root cause of the protracted problem through a comprehensive and inclusive approach, said the statement. The group said the blockade is starving people to death.

The leader of ARSA, Ata Ullah, has said hundreds of young Rohingya have joined the group, which says it is waging a legitimate defence against the army and for human rights.
