Farnham students celebrate record-breaking GCSE results

Farnham students celebrate record-breaking GCSE results”

Adult learners in North Yorkshire have celebrated another successful year of GCSE results.

Pupils who started their GCSE courses in September previous year will also have a mix of old and new GCSEs when they take their exams in 2018.

Top of the class was Lowenna Riley, who achieved three grade 9 and seven A*- the highest possible grade in every subject, with a school spokesman describing her performance as "truly exceptional".

Head Teacher, Ms Elaine Purves said: "The results are tribute to the tremendous amount of work our students and staff have put in over the last two years".

Zainab, is looking forward to joining The Crest Academy sixth form in September having achieved 9 in English Literature and 8 in Maths.

"Our students have applied themselves diligently and conscientiously and they should be rightfully proud of their achievements. Well done to all, including our parents, who play a vital part in the education and success of their child".

The school Worthing school saw a significant increase in its A* and A grades this year, making up 44 per cent of all grades.

Head girl Elizabeth Williams achieved an fantastic two 8's, in maths and English literature, a 7 for English Language 2 A*'s, 4 A's and 2 B's, whilst also carrying out her other duties across the school.

By 2020, all GCSE subjects will be graded from 9 to 1.

"63% of our students passed English and maths which means they will be able to move onto the career and educational pathways of their choice".

Grades 8 and 9 are similar to an A*, but only the top two per cent of students in the country receive a 9.

"The English and Maths, despite what the national news says, they have done really well".

The percentage of students gaining top grades improved on last year's figure, continuing an upward trend at the academy over the last four years.

Headteacher Sharon Marshall said the majority of students had gained what they needed to continue on their chosen paths.

"There isn't a direct comparison for some of the grades but essentially a 7 is an old grade A, an 8 is an A* so a 9 is an A**".

Simon Ashton, Senior Tutor at Nacro's Boston education centre said: "We are absolutely delighted with the progress our post-16 students have made and all their hard work in the lead up to their GCSE exams this summer".
