Amid heightened tensions, Phoenix mayor urges Trump to delay campaign-style rally”

President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally in Arizona on Tuesday evening - and there are already worries that he could use the rally to make more incendiary statements that could further inflame racial tensions in the United States. Jeff Flake, who is facing a primary challenge and has been openly critical of Trump, and John McCain, who is battling brain cancer and cast a decisive vote against Senate Republicans' health care plan.

Jess O'Connell, CEO of the Democratic National Committee, panned the idea on Monday, saying a "pardon for Joe Arpaio is a pardon for white supremacy".

The immigration issue has been a touchstone of Trump's throughout his campaign and the early days of his administration, centered on his promise to construct a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Additionally, another group is planning a "Stand for Patriotism" rally to counter what organizers are calling "anti-American and hate groups". It would also come just one week after Trump held a disastrous press conference at which he said there were "fine people" marching among the neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville.

He called the 85-year-old sheriff, defeated in the last election, a "great American patriot" who had "done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration".

Republican President Donald Trump's first political event since the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, has prompted several groups opposed to his policies to gather in Phoenix, and authorities are taking extra precautions to keep the peace. He now faces up to six months in prison and is expected to be sentenced on October 5.

"He's not totally polished and everyone tears apart his words, but you'll never have to guess what he's thinking and I like that much better than a politician who just gets up there and buoyantly lies and is bought by lobbyists", Brown said.

McCain won his own primary election against Ward previous year by more than 11 percentage points, and went on to beat the Democrat in the general election by 13 points, even after he broke with Trump in the month before the election and refused to vote for him.

People seeking orders of protection, or any other form of emergency relief, are encouraged to go to municipal courts, justice courts or regional Superior Court locations instead of downtown facilities.

Sgt. Daniel Macias of the Arizona State University Police Department also said there will be extra ASU police presence on the downtown Phoenix campus Tuesday to make sure students, faculty and staff are safe.

Ward, a physician who drew only 39 percent of the vote in a primary fight against McCain past year, is seen as a longshot by top Arizona Republicans.

Trump's rally in Arizona has been condemned by Phoenix's mayor, and advocates say Trump is only coming to Arizona to push his anti-immigrant agenda and stoke fears against immigrant communities, whom he routinely characterizes as violent criminals.

Republican Governor Doug Ducey told the Arizona Republic that he would welcome Trump on the tarmac when he arrived but would not attend the rally.

"You're putting people's safety at risk", he said.

Gallego is anxious that Trump will go through with it because "he knows the white nationalists are really pissed off because he just fired the head white nationalist in Steve Bannon".

Trump was to address a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday night.
