Russia: Attacker Shot Dead After Stabbing Rampageā€

"A man was moving along the main streets stabbing people", the local law enforcement committee in Surgut said in a statement on its website.

The Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement that the suspected attacker was killed by police fire after the assault.

Later, the identity of the attacker has been revealed; he's a 23-year-old local resident.

Soon after the stabbings, the "Islamic State" (IS) militia claimed responsibility and described the man as a "soldier" of the jihadist group. The circumstances, motives, as well as the personality of the attacker, are yet to be clarified. The police opened an investigation for terrorism.

But the regional interior ministry told Interfax news agency that the theory that the incident was "a terrorist (attack) is not the main one".

Social media images from the scene showed a police officer kneeling over the suspect who was lying on the ground with his face covered. It said armed police called to the scene "liquidated" the attacker following the stabbing on Saturday morning. The report said one woman was stabbed while standing at an ATM. A knife-wielding man went on a stabbing rampage in a Siberian city on Saturday, wounding seven people before police shot and killed him.

The city lies some 2,100km northeast of Moscow in the oil-rich Khanty-Mansi region.

The assault came within days of deadly attacks in Spain and Finland.
