Of Course Donald Trump Looked at the Eclipse Without Glasses”

The one rule of Monday's total solar eclipse was not to look at it without special glasses. In a New York Times article on August 3, Lear was quoted as saying that he would forgo the White House reception because, "This is a presidency that has chosen to neglect totally the arts and humanities - deliberately defund them - and that doesn't rest pleasantly with me".

Standing together on the Truman Balcony of the White House - while wearing their special-purpose solar "eclipse glasses" - the trio caught sight of the rare phenomenon as it made its way through Washington, D.C., on Monday afternoon. The next solar eclipse over the continent will be in 2024. Trump turned away as soon as someone yelled, "Don't look".

If you plan to look at the sun during an eclipse or at any other time, make sure you put on a pair of protective glasses or use a pinhole projector.

The eclipse was the first since the founding of the republic that will pass directly over only this country, and it traversed a 3,000-mile path, from OR through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, before finally disappearing off the coast of Charleston, S.C.at 2:49 p.m.

And though experts repeatedly warned of the dangers of staring directly into the sun, both Donald and Melania looked up at the sky sans sunglasses for a few seconds.

The solar eclipse was over from coast to coast in 90 minutes.
