Modi condoles death in Utkal Express derailment”

Along with four suspensions, one official has been transferred, while DRM Delhi and GM Northern Railway have been sent on leave.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3.5 lakh for the kin of those who died in the train accident near Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh.

Another train accident in November in Uttar Pradesh had killed 150 people. The locals have blamed the rail authorities for gross negligence. Twenty-two of them were in critical condition. Soon after the derailment of 14 coaches of the train near Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar, 12 injured people were admitted to private hospitals in Meerut and were treated free of cost.

In a tough message, the Railway minister said that any laxity in operations by the Railway Board will not be allowed.

"It's time to act fast to revive the ailing railways", said Sukumar Chaubey, a rail safety expert. It was not "clear" what kind of work was going on at the site, the official said. All these things will be investigated.

Prabhu said the senior officials have been asked to rush to the site. "Action against some senior officials is likely". It is reported that at least 10 people were killed and over 50 were injured in the accident after several coaches of the express derailed.

"A fracture on the railway tracks was said to be the main cause behind that accident". Jamshed said they were looking into it.

Fourteen cars in the middle of the train went off the tracks, crumpling into each other and crashing into nearby houses. Gates near the crossing were closed. "It seems all (concerned employees) will be suspended", he says. Meanwhile, the workers on the track fled the scene leaving all their equipment.

He had also ruled out the involvement of any terror group in the accident.

The railway staff was working to clear the derailed coaches and fix the damaged tracks as all trains on the route have been diverted.

Indian Express sources said that work related to the doubling of tracks was being done next to the line.

The district administration has begun rescue operations; National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been sent from Delhi.
