Marist Poll: Three Key States 'Embarrassed,' Turn on Trump

Marist Poll: Three Key States 'Embarrassed,' Turn on Trump”

Support for President Trump has dipped below 40 percent in a trio of key states - Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and MI - which propelled him to the White House in 2016.

However, six in 10 voters in all three states said they believed the U.S. role in the world has been diminished under the leadership of President Trump.

Only 36 percent of MI voters overall approve of Trump, compared to 55 percent who disapprove of the job he's done since taking office.

In Pennsylvania, 35 percent approve and 54 percent disapprove, while in Wisconsin, 34 percent give him a thumbs up and 56 percent do not.

Three polls were conducted in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania this past week following last weekend's violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The new polls also showed that just 25% of voters in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin said they felt proud of the president, and 28% of those polled in MI said the same.

According to NBC News, the polls also found Trump's job approval rating in those states to be below 40%.

Roughly a quarter of registered voters in those states said they are "proud" of his conduct, the polls said.

Comparatively, 25 percent of voters in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were "proud" of Trump's administration, but 28 percent of MI voters shared that sentiment, according to the poll. In Pennsylvania, 47 percent want Democrats to control Congress, compared to 37 percent who favor Republicans while in Wiscosin the Democratic advantage is 46 percent-38 percent.

NBC surveyed 795 voters in MI, 773 in Pennsylvania, and 801 voters in Wisconsin from August 13 through August 17.

Trump's low approval numbers in these three key states present an opening for Democrats in 2018, the survey suggests.

In Michigan and Wisconsin, 64 percent of voters shared that sentiment. Some 60% of voters in all three states said they believe the US' role on the global stage has been weakened by Trump. The polls included a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points in either direction.

The polls were conducted August 13-17, after last weekend's white supremacist rally and violence in Charlottesville, Va., and amid the fallout from Trump's response to those events.

Trump initially said "many sides" were to blame for the violence, then later condemned the white supremacists.
