Maria Sharapova lifts lid on feud with Serena Williams in new book

Maria Sharapova lifts lid on feud with Serena Williams in new book”

"But we are not", Sharapova wrote. Following that decision, Sharapova elected to enter Wimbledon qualifying in the final week of June instead of requesting a main-draw wild wildcard.

"Her suspension under the terms of the tennis anti-doping program was completed and therefore was not one of the factors weighed in our wildcard selection process", a spokesperson for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) told BBC Sport.

The five-time Grand Slam victor will face a hard road at the Open as one of eight wild card qualifiers.

Sharapova is Russia's most decorated tennis player having won a total of five Grand Slam tournaments, namely the Australian Open in 2008, the French Open in 2012 and 2014, Wimbledon in 2004 and the US Open in 2006.

The USTA also said that Sharapova will speak to young players about the anti-doping program.

Maria Sharapova has been granted a wild card entry to play in the US Open after 15 months out following a suspension for doping.

The 2006 victor served her 15-month doping ban for a violation at the 2016 Australian Open and returned to tennis in late April. This year's tournament at Flushing Meadows runs from 28 August to 10 September.

It was at the 2016 Australian Open where the Russian tested positive for the banned drug Meldonium.

"Previous US Open champions who have received US Open main draw wildcards include Martina Hingis, Lleyton Hewitt, Kim Clijsters and Juan Martin del Potro", the statement added.

But she now has the opportunity to replicate her 2006 success in NY, having pulled out of this week's Western & Southern Open with an arm problem to focus on the final grand slam of the year.

Still recovering from that hip injury she suffered earlier this year in Rome and dealing with a new injury on her arm, Sharapova was forced to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

She was denied entry to Roland Garros by the French Tennis Federation in May, which said it was seeking "to protect the high standards of the game" by not allowing a convicted doper to receive a wild card.
