Dozens of migrants disembark on Spanish beach in front of shocked tourists”

In contrast, some 13,200 migrants came to Greece this year - more than 11,700 of whom arrived by sea - down from 176,906 in total the previous year.

"We assume that some of the change is due to the fact that the route [to Spain] is considered a safe route up to the coast through Morocco", said Joel Millman, a senior IOM spokesman.

Earlier this year, it emerged the number of migrants reaching Malaga in the first six months of 2017 - 749 people - had nearly equalled then umber for the whole of the previous year.

Most migrants are crammed into flimsy toy boats, raising fears over their safety, said Krzysztof Borowski of the agency.

The two incidents were the latest evidence of the significant uptick in the number of migrants seeking to make Spain their European point of entry.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) - incorporated into the United Nations system in late 2016 - says the number of migrants arriving in Spain is three times higher than it was this time a year ago.

"It's possible that Spain will outperform Greece this year", according to Millman.

However, overall numbers of migrants have fallen by nearly 60% from the same period the previous year.

The migrant crisis is far from over, and this video is a glaring reminder.

At least 121 refugees lost their lives while trying to reach Spain by sea this year, compared to 97 last year, the IOM said.

Experts say it's hard to pinpoint why the water route to Spain via Morocco has become a preferred option for some migrants.

According to the UNHCR representative, Spain has to get ready to protect the needs of those newly arriving, identify people in need of protection and those with special needs, like minors or potential victims of trafficking.

Even if the number of migrants to Spain continues to rise, it is unlikely to reach the record of some 40,000 arrivals the country had in 2006, according to the Spanish Red Cross.

African migrants are seeking a cheaper and easier path to Europe with a rising number setting sail for Spain from Morocco using toy dinghies and jetskis, migration experts said on Thursday.
