Bright moon may spoil Perseid meteor shower viewing this weekend

Bright moon may spoil Perseid meteor shower viewing this weekend”

On Aug. 7, the moon turned full, and will be shining bright making it harder to see the full effect of the meteor shower in the night sky.

"This year, the moon will make those fainter meteors tougher to see".

Cooke says the key to seeing the meteor show is to go to a dark area prior to the shower's peak and sit outside for an hour or so.

The Perseid meteor shower is caused by meteoroids, bits of solid matter ejected from Swift-Tuttle comet.

On this night, the moon will be around three-quarters full, making it trickier to spot the shower in the sky.

"There will also be good rates either side of the peak shower between 11th to 12th August and 13th to 14th August". According to the International Meteor Organization (IMO), a bright moon can obstruct the shower and this year, the moon will have waned to around 80% illumination by 12 August.

Saturday night, we still have rain lingering into early Sunday along with some clouds, so that leaves Sunday night being the best night to view these for most of New England. So, no moonlight and a viewing location away from the light pollution created by our big cities gives you the best opportunity to see some...but we'll have that moonlight this year.

Perseid Meteor Shower (Perseids).

NASA suggest going outside between midnight and dawn, allowing 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, then simply lie on your back and look up to the sky.

The Perseid meteors pose no threat to Earth. "These meteors tend to be very long and long-lasting so it is definitely worth trying to see some of them", the IMO said, according to Newsweek.

This swirling ball of ice and dust-remnants from when our universe formed-was discovered in 1862 and forever changed how we thought about the streaks of light that zip across the sky."This is one of the first comets that really convinced people that there was a direct link between certain comets and meteor showers", James Zimbelman, a planetary geologist with the National Air and Space Museum, told Smithsonian.com previous year. "At best, they outburst from a normal rate of 80-100 meteors per hour to a few hundred per hour", he says in a statement.

They got their name from their location, which is close to the constellation of Perseus, a Greek mythological hero who killed Medusa. Every 133 years it makes an orbit around the sun.
