Meteor Showers in 2017 That Will Light Up Night Skies

Meteor Showers in 2017 That Will Light Up Night Skies”

The astronomical event, which is perhaps the most popular meteor shower of the year, will peak at 1PM ET (6PM in the UK) on 12 August.

Everyone's so excited about the solar eclipse that they nearly forgot about the Perseids, a wonderful annual celestial event which will take place starting on 11 August and ending on 13 August, having a peak on 12 August. During the Perstoid meteor shower you can expect to see between fifty to a hundred meteors an hour in places where the sky is very dark. Perseids occurs normally every year in August with a flare rate of about 80-100 per hour at 60km per second speed.

Comet Swift-Tuttle has been well documented each time it has come close to Earth. "But the good news is that the Perseids are rich in fireballs; otherwise the moon would really mess with them". The bits and pieces from comet Swift-Tuttle slam into the Earth's upper atmosphere at some 210,000 kilometers (130,000 miles) per hour, lighting up the nighttime with fast-moving Perseid meteors. Records of the meteor shower date back nearly 2,000 years.

The night of the Full Moon was August 7-8, so on the nights of August 11-12 and August 12-13, it will still be roughly three-quarters full.

If you're from Detroit or another big city, we suggest you go outside of town!

"Tonight thousands of meteors will dance like champagne bubbles in the summer sky, pale sparks timid as snowflakes will shower the earth, and a heavenly fireworks display as wondrously holy as a human heartbeat will bloom in the hush of the vast cosmos". If our planet happens to pass through an unusually dense clump of meteoroids - comet rubble - we'll see an elevated number of meteors.

The weather is going to play a large role in this event, of course, as clear or cloudy skies will determine who will actually get to see the meteor shower. Instead, bring along a blanket or a lawn chair, so you can sit or lie down, and look straight up in to the night sky.

Its name comes from the point at which the meteors appear to come from - its radiant - in the constellation of Perseus.

The best way to see it would be to watch the sky from a wide, open space - away from trees and tall buildings.

If you get to a dark place, the shower is best viewed between midnight and 6 a.m.
