Franklin develops over the Caribbean, approaching the Yucatan

Franklin develops over the Caribbean, approaching the Yucatan”

The storm is forecasted to maintain tropical storm strength as it crosses the peninsula on Tuesday. It is expected to continue moving west before dissipating over mainland Mexico midweek.

On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory for Tropical Storm Franklin.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for most of the Yucatan Peninsula. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for parts of central America.

"On the forecast track, the center of Franklin will be near the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula by this evening", the U.S. National Hurricane Center says.

A tropical storm watch extends southward to Belize City, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible.

Forecast for the Yucatan Peninsula: Cloudy skies with 80 percent chance of intense storms in the region. There is an outside shot that Franklin could strengthen rapidly to a hurricane prior to landfall tonight.

Rainfall of about three to six inches are expected with this system, with isolated amounts of rain that could reach a foot through Wednesday.

Tourists visiting Mexico's Riviera Maya region should expect several inches of rain, some coastal flooding and unsafe rip currents into Tuesday.

So far, we have not had a hurricane in the Atlantic for the 2017 season.

Tropical Storm Franklin will bring locally heavy rain and gusty winds to the Cayman Islands and Honduras early on Monday. However, no storm this season has lasted more than two days and none have produced peak winds above 57 miles per hour (50 knots), so Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) is just 44 percent of average for this date.
