Trump boosts McMaster amid criticism: 'a good man and very pro”

"General McMaster and I are working very well together", he said to The New York Times.

In addition to the firings of people seen as particularly pro-Trump, many on the right also seized on a decision to extend a security clearance for Susan Rice, President Barack Obama's final national security adviser.

President Donald Trump issued a statement of support Friday evening for national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who has come under fire from conservative media outlets this week.

Trump also says McMaster "is a good man and very pro-Israel".

"Everything the president wants to do, McMaster opposes", a former senior official said in a wide-ranging interview.

Despite those differences, McMaster organized and attended a farewell reception for Harvey this week and voiced support for his pursuit of a new job in the Trump administration.

According to Lake, documents showing that Rice made the unmasking requests were uncovered by the NSC's former senior director for intelligence, Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who was sacked by McMaster on Wednesday. Bannon and Gorka have recently become a more regular and outspoken presence at meetings led by McMaster and his team on Afghanistan, the Middle East and the administration's national security strategy.

General McMaster had sought to remove him in March when Central Intelligence Agency leaders raised concerns about him, but Mr Cohen-Watnick appealed to Mr Trump's top advisers, Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner.

One of those fired - Director for Strategic Planning, Rich Higgins - was canned last month after writing a memo that described threats to Trump's presidency to include globalists, bankers, the "deep state", and Islamists.

His dismissal follows other recent changes at the NSC.

"McMaster basically has this list and over the next two weeks he's going to phase out" more senior officials loyal to Trump, an unnamed source told the conservative Free Beacon. Even a single page of bullet points on the country seemed to tax the president's attention span on the subject, said senior White House officials.

Another ally, blogger Mike Cernovich, has been tweeting links to McMasterLeaks, dedicated to showing examples of the lieutenant general undermining Trump. Lovinger accused anti-Trump bureaucrats of politicizing the security clearance process.

The barrage of unflattering portrayals emerged as McMaster worked with new chief of staff John Kelly to purge the White House national security council of staffers from the nationalist wing of Trump's base.
