UK To Ban Petrol & Diesel Cars From 2040”

In a move which follows a similar announcement by France in recent weeks, the proposals are part of the government's clean air plan and aims to improve air quality in the United Kingdom and tackle excessive levels of nitrogen dioxide in towns and cities.

Speaking to The Car Expert at the recent launch of the new Volvo XC60, Jon Wakefield said that there is now a growing real understanding of what electrification of cars can provide.

Peter Millichap, UK director of marketing at Teletrac Navman, told Fleet News that he welcomed any measures which help combat pollution and improve air quality.

"We can't carry on with diesel and petrol [gasoline] cars", he said, "not just because of the health problems that they cause, but also because the emissions that they cause would mean that we would accelerate climate change, do damage to our planet and the next generation".

The Government has just announced its intention to ban sales of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2040, but hybrid vehicles will not be included in the ban.

Asked if there was no alternative to more wind farms and nuclear power energy stations, the Scot replied: "There is no alternative to embracing new technology".

Electric cars are excused from additional taxes and fees gasoline-powered cars face there, and perks such as free charging or access to restricted bus lanes incentivize ownership.

There are now over four-thousand electric vehicles on New Zealand roads, with those numbers set to increase in the coming years.

"While nearly 59,000 new green cars were sold in the United Kingdom a year ago, which was up 27%, clearly hybrid was a big part of that".

The global shift toward electric vehicles will create upheaval for industry: From oil majors harmed by reduced gasoline demand to spark plug and fuel injection manufacturers whose products aren't needed by plug-in cars.

Here are our favourite electric cars now on sale, and we've also named the ones to avoid.

Brokers see price parity between electric and non -electric vehicles as early as next year when Tesla's ramp-up hits full swing.

"We would have preferred a target to hit and the ways to hit it being left to industry to work out, but the industry has a history of meeting targets and when we know more detail we work towards them".

A smaller targeted scrappage scheme could take place in the future, however and be aimed at diesels registered before 1 September 2015, with owners being paid up to £8000 to replace their cars with cleaner electric vehicles.

Charging zones for the most polluting vehicles is also an option if these measures don't cut emissions enough. In addition to a new goal for the city to operate a zero-emission public transit system by 2050, a new zero-emission zone for private vehicles will be established by 2025 that will eventually be expanded to encompass the entire city.

Earlier this month, tIt comes after the company that runs Britain's electricity network suggested electric vehicles could create as much as 18 gigawatts of additional demand for electricity at peak times by 2050; the equivalent of almost six Hinkley Point nuclear power stations.
