Adam Peaty breaks world record TWICE as he storms to victory

Adam Peaty breaks world record TWICE as he storms to victory”

He's nearly taken a second off everyone else over a 50m dash.

Cameron ver der Burgh, the South African 2012 Olympic champion over 100m, scratched the longer sprint in order to challenge Peaty over 50m and was a next-best 26.54 seconds.

"Initially I'm disappointed. Even now it's not a disappointment though, I've got to keep my head held high", said the University of Stirling swimmer.

"These last four days have been very, very hard work", Peaty, 22, said. "We're only at the start of our four-year journey to Tokyo 2020".

Since he won his first worldwide title at the Commonwealth Games exactly three years ago, Peaty has now accumulated 16 golds on the world stage.

He will now try to make it a triple-double in the 4x100m mixed relay later on Wednesday.

Welsh swimmer Georgia Davies, Peaty, James Guy and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor swam a collective 3:41.56 to finish behind Canada and China who both claimed bronze in 3:41.24. "I was on target for it but I just missed out but 50m tomorrow and I'll see what I can get".

"I was quite relaxed, I wasn't going out there this morning for a world record", Peaty said.

There were more records broken. The previous record of 1:04.35 was set by Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte.

Litchfield commented: "The tactic tonight was a case of doing the same thing as this morning and I pretty much did that".

'I feel very good, but it's exhausting coming in and coming out, switching on and switching off'.

Masse produced an outstanding world-record swim of 58.10 seconds as Australia's quiet world championships continued with Emily Seebohm failing to defend her title.

The fastest qualifier in his maiden 200m freestyle final, Scott was a little off the pace early on, finishing in a time of 1:45.26, exactly a tenth slower than in his semi-final.

"There's no way I can be disappointed with that".

"In terms of execution of the race, it was how I wanted it to be".

"That race was always going to be a showdown, an exciting dog fight", King told reporters. "It might take a best time to take a medal - there's some fast guys in there so you never know".

"I didn't even think about world records". Kathleen Dawson was 19th in 28.42, missing out on a place in the semi-finals.
