US Navy fires warning shots at Iranian ship in Gulf — BBCI”

A US Navy patrol ship fired warning shots Tuesday at an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps boat in the Persian Gulf as it closed in on the American vessel, officials said.

The shots were used as a last resort after the Iranian ship failed to respond to calls over the radio and sound signals from the American ships, including five blasts from the U.S. Navy ship's whistle, an global symbol for danger.

As the vessel continued to approach, the Thunderbolt initiated a series of warning measures, included warning flares and then five short blasts of a whistle, an internationally recognized danger sign.

In reply the IRGC third naval zone said that its forces neutralized the United States vessel's provocative move.

Ultimately, the vessel came within 150 yards of the Thunderbolt. No warning shots were fired.

Confrontations between USA and Iranian forces have grown particularly tense during the Trump administration. The Iranian ships had approached the USA ship at high speeds and didn't respond to requests to stop.

The USS Thunderbolt was transiting with the USS Vella Gulf, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, and two other U.S. Coast guard vessels at the time, according to CNN.

At least three other USA vessels were nearby at the time.

"After the warning shots were fired, the Iranian vessel halted its unsafe approach", the lieutenant said in a statement, adding that the Iranian vessel created "a risk for collision". "This type of behavior is not in accordance with worldwide law and created an unnecessary risk of collision that could have led to potential miscalculation and escalation". The vessel eventually stopped, but stayed in the area for several hours, according to the Defense Department. "It is our desire to see more of that type of behavior going forward".

The defense official called the incident "unsafe and unprofessional".
