Kuwait expels Iran envoys over alleged terror links”

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi announced on Thursday that Kuwaiti envoy Fallah Al-Hajraf has been summoned to the foreign ministry earlier in the day over the groundless accusations raised by the Persian Gulf state's officials against Iran on a case known as the "Abdali cell".

Iran responded to the expulsions by filing a complaint with the Kuwaiti charge d'affaires, the Iranian news agency ISNA said.

The move came after Kuwait convicted a group of men, one Iranian and the rest Kuwaiti, of "spying for Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group" a year ago.

Kuwait also reduced the number of Iranian diplomats to 9, while giving Iranian diplomats 45 days to leave the country. "Iranian sides helped and supported the cell members", Kuwait's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Iranian official source, ISNA news agency, reported that Ambassador Alireza Enayati has been asked to leave.

The tensions with Shiite Iran comes as Kuwait is trying to mediate a widening row between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt.

The men were initially convicted by a lower court, but were later acquitted on appeals several months later and set free.

Kuwait's supreme court last month sentenced the mastermind of the cell to life in jail and condemned 20 others to various prison terms for links with Iran and Lebanese Shia militia Hezbollah, and plotting terror attacks in Kuwait. Kuwait's interior ministry also confirmed that the 14 men were on the run.

In August 2015, Kuwait said it had busted the 26-member cell and seized arms, ammunition and explosives from them.

Kuwait has maintained good ties with Iran despite pressure from regional power Saudi Arabia to cut ties with Tehran.

The supreme court, whose rulings are final, overturned their acquittal on June 18 and sentenced them to between five and 15 years in prison.
