Police Seize World's Two Largest Darknet Marketplaces

Police Seize World's Two Largest Darknet Marketplaces”

The Justice Department compared the takedown of the two sites to the shuttering of Silk Road in 2013, noting that AlphaBay and Hansa hosted tens of thousands more listings than Silk Road.

There were as many as 250,000 listings for the sale of illegal drugs and chemicals on AlphaBay alone according to Europol.

The 26-year-old founder of AlphaBay, Alexandre Caze, was taken into custody by Thai authorities in early July, according to media reports.

Police have also seized millions of dollars and filed a civil forfeiture complaint against the "high value assets" owned by Cazes and his wife.

The Justice Department said Thursday the internet's largest "dark market" has been shut down. "Subsequent enquiries located the Hansa market infrastructure in the Netherlands, with follow-up investigations by the Dutch police leading to the arrest of its two administrators in Germany and the seizure of servers in the Netherlands, Germany and Lithuania".

The Dutch Police's effort to keep the Hansa Market operation was a stroke of genius, because troves of AlphaBay users created accounts and moved illegal operations on Hansa.

Dark web users, meanwhile, were rattled by the sting, advising each other to change their passwords as soon as possible, and spreading paranoid warnings of a possible "backdoor" into dark net markets. "We will continue to find, arrest, prosecute, convict and incarcerate criminals, drug traffickers and their enablers, wherever they are".

U.S. Department of Justice officials on Thursday announced the takedown of a Dark Web marketplace that allowed people to buy and sell drugs, weapons, computer hacking tools and other illicit items.

Prior to its takedown, AlphaBay reached over 200 000 users and 40 000 vendors.

Both Sessions and U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein ducked those questions, instead focusing on the bust.

The site operated on "Tor" network and used cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Monero and Ethereum to hide the location of its servers, administrators and users. Cazes was arrested on request of the USA embassy, and was found dead in the cell's toilet after apparently hanging himself with his towel. Hansa Market was open earlier this week and announced that it was planning to ban fentanyl from the site. "There are more of these operations to come", he warned. Furthermore, Europol stated they have prepared "intelligence packages" to be sent out to "law enforcement partners across 37 countries, spawning many follow-up investigations across Europe and beyond".

He said: "We have learned a lot over the years about taking down global criminal syndicates, and that same experience applies to organizations that are facilitated on the dark net".

It was a "landmark" operation, according to US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Andrew McCabe.

Two of the drug traffickers on the website have also been identified and charged after heroin and a synthetic opiate purchased on AlphaBay were linked to overdose deaths in OR and Florida. The FBI didn't respond to WIRED's request for more information, and Europol declined to comment beyond its press statement.
