This Poll Is Horrific For the GOP, Come 2018”

"The survey results suggest some reasons that Democrats have not been able to capitalize yet on voter antipathy toward Trump", said the Post's Mike DeBonis and Emily Guskin.

One major trend we have seen over the last 50-75 years is that even when a President is elected, while his party has control of the House and Senate, the following mid-term election quickly changes this.

The snapshot emerges just as Congress has hit a major stumbling block in its effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, with Republican leaders in the Senate falling short this week of the votes they need to advance their deeply unpopular bill.

As for how long the Democrats have to try to turn those concerning enthusiasm numbers around, Election Day for the upcoming midterms is still more than a year away, scheduled for November 6, 2018.

Republicans now hold a 24-seat advantage in the House, and Democrats have pointed to the spike in activism, Trump's unpopularity and voters' general preference for Democratic congressional candidates as evidence that the majority could be in play.

The Republicans on the other hand don't know what they believe, who they are or what they want to be. Given the state of the Democratic Party, the lack of good quality candidates, and the absence of a message, it seemed as if anything could happen concerning the 2018 midterms. Eighty-two percent of pro-Trump registered voters are as strongly committed to supporting him.

For Trump's policy issues, 75 percent of those polled said they support Trump's pledge to bargain with worldwide companies to keep jobs in the United States; 68 percent support his willingness to take action against North Korean nuclear development; 66 percent support his use of military force to respond to Syria's use of chemical weapons; and 53 percent back his travel ban targeting six majority-Muslim countries.

This Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted from July 10-13, prior to the collapse of the GOP health care plan, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Needless to say, the top, headline number in the poll is still encouraging for Democrats, especially considering they have ample time to hammer out the policies and defining principles they intend to run on.
