MUG SHOT: Notorious jewel thief Doris Payne arrested again

MUG SHOT: Notorious jewel thief Doris Payne arrested again”

An 86-year-old worldwide jewelry thief was back in court on Tuesday, this time facing charges of allegedly stealing about $80 worth of items from a Walmart store in Chamblee, Georgia.

Faced with a well-to-do woman with money to spend, store employees would relax their rules and bring out multiple high-value pieces at once, and Payne would quickly slip the expensive baubles on and off until the employee lost track and she could easily leave with one in hand.

Her criminal career spans at least two continents and five decades.

She had taken items from the pharmacy, electronics and grocery departments, according to the police report obtained by the station.

More recently, Payne was accused of stealing a $2,000 diamond necklace from a store at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta.

Payne was arrested on the charge of Theft by Shoplifting. Earlier this year, Payne's attorney claimed she had cancer but did not provide documents to support that. "We're not talking about high-end jewelry", he told the Associated Press.

"I don't have any regrets about stealing jewelry", she says in the film's trailer.

Her lawyer, Drew Findling, was quoted by local media as saying: "This is a sharp contrast to all the cases in the past". She is thought to have stolen $2 million in jewellery and was profiled in a 2013 documentary, reports said. Payne had been nabbed in Atlanta in October 2015 after she was caught allegedly shoplifting a pair of $700 earrings from the Saks Fifth Avenue in Phipps Plaza.

Less than four-months ago Payne was in court where she was sentenced to time served, house arrest, and probation.

Payne's exploits as a thief made her the focus of a Netflix documentary entitled "The Life And Crimes of Doris Payne" in 2014. She's well-known in fine-jewelry circles, and authorities say she has pocketed expensive jewels from stores around the world.

"I understand that the shopkeepers have a different opinion, but they all agreed she was charming and friendly and nice", Von Helms told the Journal-Constitution.

Her story has caught the attention of documentary filmmakers.

Payne allegedly attempted to steal only food and medical supplies, as opposed to her usual target, jewelry.
