California Wildfires Feeding on Grass Fed by Winter Rain

California Wildfires Feeding on Grass Fed by Winter Rain”

Wessling says the San Jose Fire Department and state firefighters are battling the blaze near Alum Rock Park, where visitors and nearby residents are being evacuated.

Firefighters are having to tackle these fires from the air because they are completely inaccessible from the ground. The National Interagency Fire Center report wildfire risk will be high in inland Southern California in July and in parts of Northern California during August and September.

In Colorado, crews were winding down the fight against a wildfire that temporarily forced hundreds of people to evacuate near the resort town of Breckenridge.

"The majority of the fires that are burning with such intensity are in and around the Williams Lake area and up in the Cariboo; those were lightning strikes that happened on Friday afternoon during a dry lightning storm", Daniels said.

One wild fire destroyed about 30 homes and two airport hangars near the town of Cache Creek 354 km northeast of Vancouver.

Wildfires barreled across the baking landscape of the western USA and Canada, destroying a smattering of homes, forcing thousands to flee and temporarily trapping children and counselors at a California campground.

Despite the warm temperatures and low humidity, almost 1,700 firefighters have surrounded the blaze, strengthened containment lines and slowed its growth, Cal Fire said. There's not much for which residents can return.

He and his family were among the evacuees as flames raced through grassy foothills in the Sierra Nevada, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) north of Sacramento.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A 45-square-mile fire was 70 percent contained, allowing for all evacuations to be canceled.

There were 202 wildfires burning in Canada's British Columbia province by Tuesday night and 14,000 people had been forced to evacuate their homes.

With improved conditions, Alphonse said he finally had a moment Wednesday to reflect on the three days of fire fighting without the aid of power or telephone service.

A burned out auto sits next to a home that was destroyed by the Wall Fire on July 9, 2017 in Oroville, California.

The blaze, which started Saturday along Highway 154, has destroyed eight homes and 12 outbuildings south of Lake Cachuma, and prompted the evacuation of more than 3,500. It's 15 percent contained.

This wildfire season has surprised many, after ample snowfall this past winter and a very wet spring suggested that a mild forest fire season was in store, said Lori Daniels, a forest and conservation sciences professor with the University of British Columbia.

Zaniboni says he expects containment to go up when new numbers are announced at a morning briefing.

The blaze, which was 24% contained, has scorched 18,666 acres of tall grass and brush in an area not easily accessible to firefighters, Cal Fire said.
